In any language, LICA would be pleased to welcome and work with Elaine Chao, the proposed incoming Secretary for the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT), who President-elect Donald Trump nominated at the end of November.

Madam Secretary Chao has served previously in the administration of President George W. Bush as his Secretary of Labor, and was the only cabinet member to serve the entire eight years of Bush’s presidency. Part of her extensive government and public policy career also includes various leadership positions in the Department of Transportation, including Deputy Secretary, under President George H.W. Bush. She is now tapped to lead that agency.

Secretary Chao clearly knows the jargon and speaks our industry’s language,” says LICA Executive Director Marc Herbst. “She is intimately familiar with issues surrounding the Taft-Hartley and Fair Labor Standards Act. But, most importantly, as a local graduate from Syosset High School we do not have to explain the meaning of familiar Long Island phrases as, ‘the world’s largest parking lot,’ ‘on or close to schedule’ or ‘change at Jamaica.’  We will be fortunate to have a leader of the USDOT with roots from Long Island, which should help foster mutual understanding and ensure a good working relationship.”
