Celebrating New Jones Beach Nature Center: Another LICA Member Project

Last week’s ribbon cutting at the new Jones Beach Nature & Energy Center marked the completion of yet another handsome and high-profile public works project by LICA member Peter Scalamandre & Sons. The new net-zero energy-use building, which is designed to “bring human beings, energy networks and the natural environment together,” produces all its own power and features several indoor and outdoor exhibits, as well as teaching spaces, laboratories and an outdoor veranda that overlooks the ocean. It’s being hailed as the new “gem” of Jones Beach and Peter Scalamandre was proud to be part of it.
LICA Executive Director Marc Herbst was pleased to join Peter at the official opening ceremony which included NYS Parks Commissioner Erik Kulleseid, Regional Director George (Chip) Gorman, LIPA CEO Tom Falcone and Senator John Brooks among others. The $25 million project was funded largely by LIPA and the NYS Department of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, along with contributions from NYPA, the state Energy Research and Authority, and donations from private industry. The project area also includes an 8.8 mile bike path, a new 219-acre preserve and nearly 10 acres of parking lot area was replaced with “pollinator” vegetation. Admission to the Nature Center is free for everyone who pays the standard $8-10 admission fee to enter the Jones Beach West End.
