LICA VIEWS IN THE NEWS

libn_cover.pngLate last week, the New York Daily News published an op-ed by LICA Executive Director Marc Herbst and Julie Tighe, President of the New York League of Conservation Voters entitled “Infrastructure Upgrades to Fight Climate Change.” The piece speaks about the necessity for infrastructure investment, to not only stimulate the economy and improve our public transportation systems but also to upgrade infrastructure that will protect our region from the ravaging effects of climate change. The piece urges the Senate to pass the American Jobs Plan as well as a climate recovery plan that will help improve resiliency, avert a crisis, and put us on a green economic recovery path.

Earlier that week, Marc Herbst was quoted in a Long Island Press article which addressed the issue of highway safety after another fatal collision on the deadly Southern State Parkway last week. The article highlighted a letter sent by Senators Todd Kaminsky (D-Long Beach) and John Brooks (D-Massapequa) as well as Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages (D-Elmont) to NYSDOT Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez. The letter requests amendments be made to the state’s traffic monitoring CCTV policy in order to require footage from traffic cameras to be recorded and maintained for a certain period of time, so law enforcement can access it as needed to help identify, catch and prosecute dangerous drivers. Current NYS law limits when CCTV footage can be recorded and saved. Because LICA was instrumental in helping craft proposed new highway safety legislation which is sponsored by Senator Brooks and Assemblywoman Solages, the press reached out for his comments on the issue as well. Lastly, LICA’s Marc Herbst was also featured in a recent LI Business News cover story along with Local 138’s Business Manager John Duffy and Training Director Vincent Razzano. The piece, entitled “Making the Grade” looks at Local 138’s Apprentice Training program and discusses lucrative career options for trained operating engineers.
