veto-icon.pngLICA Continues To Fight Sand Mine Legislation

Recently, the State Legislature passed a bill which gives local authorities more authority over sand mining regulations – a bill which even the DEC opposes. Although the bill, sponsored by Assemblyman Fred Thiele Jr. (I-Sag Harbor) and Sen. Todd Kaminsky (D-Long Beach), is being promoted as an “environmental protection” act, in reality it is the result of a long-standing localized dispute with one East End sand mine operator. However, the bill, as written, could have severe repercussions throughout the Long Island/metro area construction industry, ultimately impacting the hard-working men and women of our local labor unions.

In response, LICA Executive Director Marc Herbst issued this statement following the bill’s passage “This legislation has been disingenuously promoted as an environmental protection act. In reality, it is a half-baked measure orchestrated by an assemblyman that is overreacting to an isolated local dispute and a senator with an insatiable addiction to press headlines. The legislation also undermines the hard-working men and women throughout Long Island. Sand is the lifeblood of union construction projects in the New York metropolitan region. This is an irresponsible response during a pandemic that will ultimately usurp DEC oversight of this industry. We urge Governor Cuomo to veto this legislation and protect union jobs.” You can read a related July 23rd Newsday article here.

LICA, in conjunction with New York Materials and other organizations around the state, will continue to work with our industry and labor partners to urge the Governor to veto this bill. We have sent letters to members, requesting their signature as a show of support. Click here to see a copy of the letter which other supporters are also encouraged to utilize. You can either send your letter directly to the Governor’s office or return it to LICA (at 48 S. Service Rd., Suite 401, Melville, NY 11747) who will forward all letters to the Governor.
