In Memoriam: Joseph Scalamandre
The Passing Of An Industry Patriarch

It is with great sadness that LICA recently announced the passing of Joseph Scalamandre (7/17/1934 - 7/29/2020) who died last week at the age of 86. Joe was recognized as a patriarch in the construction industry and is the beloved father of longstanding LICA board member Peter Scalamandre.

Born and raised in Freeport, Joe was a friend to all that knew him, a mentor to many, and a father figure to his lifelong employees. In 1959, Joe and his brother Fred took over a small sidewalk company after their father’s sudden passing and built it from the ground up, into the construction conglomerate that it is today. Peter Scalamandre & Sons (named after Joe’s father and now led by Joe’s son, Peter) is one of the most respected construction companies in the NY metropolitan area with a broad and diverse portfolio of work that includes heavy civil construction, underground utility and concrete work with specialties in all aspects of airport work, and public agency general contracting. Scalamandre is supported by its many affiliated companies including a ready-mix supply, equipment holding company, and a heavy-trucking company.

Joe Scalamandre’s many accomplishments and charitable donations are too numerous to list but include being named as “Man of the Year” for many organizations throughout his benevolent, charitable and gracious career.

They say the true character of a man is not defined by what he does in front of a crowd but instead by what he does when no one else is around. An example that best exemplifies Joe’s character is told by one of his employees who found a note in the conference room handwritten by Joe to one of his many Catholic Charities. The note read “Please say a prayer so that I may stay healthy and continue to get work for the many families that rely upon me so that they can be healthy and safe”. This was Joe, always concerned about others, before himself.

A private wake for Mr. Scalamandre was held this past weekend and he was laid to rest yesterday at a public funeral at Our Holy Redeemer Church in Freeport. He is survived by his son Peter and daughter Jill, daughter-in-law Connie, daughter-in-law Renee, son-in-law Mark, grandson Richie, and granddaughters Nicole, Caroline, Paulette and Allegra. He is predeceased by his son Joe Jr. and wife Carolee. Joe is also survived by his Brother Fred and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations be sent to the De LaSalle High School located in Freeport, New York – see this link for information The board and staff of LICA send our deepest heartfelt sympathies to Peter and the entire Scalamandre family.
