Gov. Hochul Headlines LIA’s State Of The Region

In a last minute surprise, it was Governor Kathy Hochul (not Gladys Knight) who played headliner and brought the ‘PIPs’ to Long Island for the LIA’s State of the Region event on Friday, January 21st. Hochul joined County Executives Steve Bellone (Suffolk) and Bruce Blakeman (Nassau), for the annual meeting to share their thoughts on the current state of affairs for their respective regions. During Hochul's 25 minute speech, she discussed the three main priorities she plans to address for our region, which she introduced as "P.I.P." an acronym for "Potholes, Islanders & Property Taxes."

Confirming her commitment to address the pothole problem, Hochul reminded the audience of her recent announcement dedicating $1 billion (to be spread over 5 years) as part of her $216 billion 2023 budget, to help fix potholes across the state (known as the ‘Pave our Potholes’ or ‘POP’ initiative). For our industry and many LICA member firms, that’s welcome news. Reportedly, 50% of those funds will be distributed to municipalities via a historical formula- similar to CHIPS, while the remaining 50% will go toward improving conditions of state-owned highways.

The governor also spoke of her proposed $2.2 billion middle-class property tax rebate and a $1.2 billion tax cut for middle-class taxpayers, as well as smaller amounts for small business recovery and tax credits. Additionally, the governor pledge additional assistance to Nassau and Suffolk counties for transit operating assistance ($144 million) and pavement renewal ($25 million) on the LIE and Northern Boulevard. Before finishing, Gov. Hochul also urged attendees to support the $4 billion Clean Water, Clean Air, and Green Jobs Environmental Bond act which will be on the ballot in November. LICA strongly supports that Bond Act as many of the environmental projects are also beneficial for our members and union workforce.
