elaine_chao.pngSenate Confirms Chao Nomination by 93-6

This past Tuesday, the Senate overwhelmingly voted to approve Elaine Chao as the next Secretary of Transportation, despite a few Democratic “no” votes. Local Senator Chuck Schumer said that he opposed Chao’s nomination because she failed to take a position on the new travel ban executive order, while Senator Kirsten Gillibrand’s “no” vote was reportedly due to Gillibrand’s concerns over Chao’s labor record, including her position on workplace safety protections, PLAs and the Davis-Bacon Act, as well as her commitment to uphold certain safety reforms. However, the large majority of Democrats and Republicans had nothing but praise and high regard for Chao, citing her long list of qualifications and experience, making her – by far – one of the least controversial Cabinet picks of the new administration. LICA and other industry partners are supportive of Chao as well, hoping that she’ll remember her Long Island roots (as a graduate of Syosset High School) when it comes to understanding the needs of our local infrastructure. For more information about Chao and her confirmation, see various articles in the bulleted IN THE NEWS section.
