The Long Island Association’s (LIA) State of the Counties Breakfast held on Wed Jan 6th, was set to feature a Q&A with LI’s two county executives, Ed Mangano and Steve Bellone. However, their spotlight was quickly overshadowed by a last minute surprise appearance by Governor Andrew Cuomo. Attendees were given a sneak-peek at the Governor’s mega-project wish list for his budget, which was officially released last week. In what felt like a pre-budget release pep-rally, Gov. Cuomo urged our local officials and citizens to get behind and support these projects which he believes will be critical to ensure a strong future for our region. This “grand plan” includes several major infrastructure projects, some listed below:

  • Third track for the LIRR (from Floral Park to Hicksville)
  • A tunnel under LI Sound to connect LI to Westchester/Bronx or CT
  • A deepwater port in Shoreham
  • A customs inspection facility for MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma
  • Commercial improvements at Republic Airport

However, many local politicians believe most of the plans will never come to fruition. Some call them “non-starters" while others noted that many of these same ideas were pitched decades ago, but never make it past the wish-list phase, due to NIMBY and other obstacles.
