Last week, to the delight of many hockey fans, Governor Cuomo announced that the Islanders had won the bid to redevelop Belmont Park, where they will build a new 18,000 seat arena to serve as their new future home. The $1 billion project is expected to create over 12,000 construction jobs as well as more than 3,000 permanent jobs. The Islander’s proposal seemed to be a heavy fan favorite over the competing proposal submitted by the New York City FC Soccer Team. In addition to the new arena, the redevelopment plan includes 435,000 square feet of retail and dining space, plus a new hotel. The current LIRR Belmont Station stop which is adjacent to the park, is now only utilized for certain high traffic events (think Belmont Stakes) but will become a permanent stop on the Hempstead branch line once the redevelopment is complete.
