80842708_vote.pngLICA Looks at the Upcoming Elections

You can’t write any article about this year’s elections without starting at the top (or should we say the bottom?). The race for the White House has captured the nation’s attention and is sure to play a role in many local races as well. Aside from all the other rhetoric, both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are touting major infrastructure spending, so at least there’s one good thing they both agree on. Below are some brief notes on a few regional elections of interest to our industry. For a complete list of all key races in LI and NY, click here. LICA urges everyone to get out and exercise their right to vote.

1st Congressional District – Rep. Lee Zeldin (R) vs. Anna Throne-Holst (D):

Incumbent Congressman Lee Zeldin is the only Long Island member who serves on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. He is being challenged by former Southampton Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst.

3rd Congressional District - Senator Jack Martins (R) vs. Tom Suozzi (D):

With Rep. Steve Israel’s retirement, his Congressional seat is up for grabs. While Suozzi (D) is a former Nassau County Executive and Mayor of Glen Cove, Senator Martins (R) is also the former Mayor of Mineola and a contractor (A&J Concrete) who understands the needs of our industry.

5th Senate District - Senator Carl Marcellino (R) vs. Jim Gaughran (D):

The incumbent Marcellino has been in office 22 years, but Gaughran is the current head of the Suffolk County Water Authority and a former Huntington town board member and Suffolk legislator.

7th Senate District - Elaine Phillips (R) vs. Adam Haber (D):

Looking to fill the seat of outgoing state Sen. Jack Martins, both Phillips and Haber have received various union endorsements, but Haber appears to be making infrastructure his priority.
