Nearly 200 LICA members and guests joined LICA’s Board of Directors and LICA Executive Director Marc Herbst, in honoring Long Island’s top highway officials at the 2015 LICA Fall Public Partner Leadership Breakfast on Friday, Sept. 18th at the Hilton Long Island. Also in attendance were Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter, Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Huntington Town Supervisor Frank Petrone, and Long Beach City Manager Jack Schnirman, who came to congratulate and commend their respective highway commissioners and DPW superintendents for a job well done. They were joined by other elected officials including: Assemblyman Todd Kaminsky, Assemblyman Joseph Saladino, Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre, Legislators Laura Curran and Rob Trotta, and Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joseph Muscarella.

LICA Chairman Jim Pratt of Pratt Brothers, Inc. presented each Honoree with their own personalized miniature wooden pay loader filled with chocolate “asphalt” candy. The award serves as a symbol of the hard work and dedication of each Honoree - and the men and women of their departments - to continually keep our highways and bridges safe, smooth and operational despite powerful storms, destructive weather patterns and challenging financial constraints. Anyone who regularly travels the roads and highways of Long Island understands just how much we rely upon a strong and stable infrastructure to support our economy and maintain our quality of life.

The 2015 LICA Honorees were:

  • Mr. Joseph Brown, New York State DOT Long Island Regional Director
  • Ms. Shila Shah-Gavnoudias, Nassau County Commissioner of Public Works
  • Mr. Gilbert Anderson, Suffolk County Commissioner of Public Works
  • Mr. James Byrne, Glen Cove Director of Public Works
  • Mr. Jim LaCarrubba, Long Beach Commissioner of Public Works
  • Mr. William Rockensies, Hempstead Commissioner of Engineering
  • Mr. Paul DiMaria, North Hempstead Commissioner of Public Works
  • Mr. Kevin Hanifan, Oyster Bay Commissioner of Highways
  • Mr. Thomas Stay, Babylon Commissioner of Public Works
  • Hon. Dan Losquadro, Brookhaven Superintendent of Highways
  • Hon. Stephen Lynch, East Hampton Superintendent of Highways
  • Hon. Peter Gunther, Huntington Superintendent of Highways
  • Mr. Thomas Owens, Islip Commissioner of Public Works
  • Hon. George Woodson, Riverhead Superintendent of Highways
  • Hon. Jay Card, Shelter Island Superintendent of Highways
  • Hon. Glenn Jorgensen, Smithtown Superintendent of Highways
  • Hon. Alex Gregor, Southampton Superintendent of Highways
  • Hon. Vincent Orlando, Southold Superintendent of Highways

The award presentations were followed by a keynote speech from the Hon. Alfonse M. D’Amato, former US Senator and current Managing Director of Park Strategies, LLC, a powerful New York lobbying firm. Senator D’Amato shared his thoughts on the upcoming 2016 presidential race as well as the current political environment. Most newsworthy, he stated the Republican presidential primary race is so competitive and fueled with Super PAC money that he predicted the ultimate candidate will be chosen at a brokered GOP convention. He too acknowledged the important role infrastructure plays in our region and on a national level, and recognized the important work done by our public partners, such as those who were honored that day.
